Honoring Black History Month in the Bay
MoAD: Museum of African Diaspora
MoAD, a contemporary art museum, celebrates Black cultures, ignites challenging conversations, and inspires learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora. Throughout Black History Month the MoAD is featuring three different exhibits from Sam Vernon, MoADs Emerging Artist Vincent Miranda, and a collection of four short films called Beyond the Sky.
African American Museum and Library at Oakland
Dedicated to the discovery, preservation, interpretation and sharing of historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in CA. The Museum and Library at Oakland is more than just a library. For Black History Month they are offering art exhibits, such as Black Representation in Comics and the Media. Representation has grown and evolved from primarily negative depictions to amazing superheroes that we can celebrate. This exhibit celebrates current representation while paying homage to the past. They also offer Black Culture Storytime. Celebrate Black History Month with an all-ages family storytime! Children's Librarian Lolade will share songs & stories from the Black diaspora.
Around San Francisco
Get some fresh air while taking in the importance of Black History Month, and the African Americans who have called the Bay Area home. Take a trip to Oracle Park which hosts a statue of one of the most well-known baseball players Willie Mays. Willie spent almost all of his 22-season Major League Baseball career playing for the San Francisco Giants. You can also take the family to visit the Presidio to learn about the Buffalo Soldiers, the famous Black cavalrymen who were stationed there from 1902-1903. Or take in the vision of peace and unity at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. You’ll get to see his inspiring words, poems and images from the Civil Rights Movement surrounding a beautiful waterfall.
