Here are just a few of the amazing women that have paved the way for others, shattered glass ceilings, fought for what they believed in, and brought us all together. LOCAL BAY AREA WOMEN WHO MADE HISTORY

Alice Waters

One of the most recognizable supporters of the organic food movement, Alice Waters has been a pioneering voice for clean eating since 1971 when she opened her famed restaurant, Chez Panisse. Her profound impact on the Bay Area’s ‘green culture’ qualifies her as a strong Bay Area woman.

Brenda Villa

Brenda is a four-time Olympic medal winner who co-founded Project 2020, a non-profit organization aiming to provide low income youths of the San Francisco mid-peninsula with the opportunity to learn to swim and play water polo.

Dian Fossey

Born in San Francisco and a graduate of San Jose State College in 1954, Fossey performed the majority of her zoological research in both the central African Congo jungle and the forests of Rwanda.

Fannie Mae Barnes

After being a conductor for six years, Barnes made history as the first woman to operate a cable car in San Francisco.

Diane Feinstein

San Francisco’s first female mayor, one of the first female US Senators, and the only woman to have presided over a US presidential inauguration, Feinstein is no stranger to being a leader. She has been a pioneering force in San Francisco’s political history for 46 years, helping to restore America’s largest cable car system, overseeing the 1984 Democratic National Convention, and authorizing the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban that eventually ended in 2004. Feinstein is still serving on the US Senate, and at the age of 82, she is the oldest senator in office.

Kamala Harris

Kamala D. Harris is the Vice President of the United States of America. She was elected Vice President after a lifetime of public service, having been elected District Attorney of San Francisco, California Attorney General, and United States Senator. Vice President Harris was born in Oakland, California to parents who emigrated from India and Jamaica. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

Rosie the Riveters

A cultural icon of World War II, representing the women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes replaced the male workers who joined the military. Rosie the Riveter is used as a symbol of American feminism and women's economic advantage.
