6 Designer Tips for Cozying Up Your Space Just in Time for Fall

Fall is quickly approaching and if you're looking for creative ways to transform your home, so that it's ready for the season, you won't want to miss out on these designer-approved tips.

Even if it's still hot where you are, consider carving out some time to prep your space for autumn's imminent arrival—this way, you'll be all ready to cozy up and relax when chillier weather makes its debut.

Switch Out Your Candles

You're likely already stocked up on candles with irresistible fall fragrances, but don't forget to rotate out your unscented candles for the season, too.

"Get terracotta, taupe, and gray-colored tapered candles for your candelabras or candle sticks," suggests Emma Kemper, the founder of Emma Beryl Interiors. "These are great decor pieces whether or not they're being used and are a subtle way to bring in the fall colors."

She also adds that you can take the same approach with the cylinder candles that go in vases or hurricanes.

Create a Reading Area in Your Home

Fall is the perfect time of year to curl up and dive into some new spooky thrillers. When the weather gets chilly outside, you'll want to have a cozy space in which to unwind already set up in your home.

Nadia Watts, the founder of Nadia Watts Interior Design, suggests creating a reading and relaxation area that you can enjoy all season long—and beyond.

"You don't need much space to create a cozy seating area where you can curl up with a book and a cup of tea," she says. Try an accent chair and side table positioned in the corner of your bedroom.

Rethink Your Weekly Bouquet

Perhaps you've gotten into the habit of making a weekly flower run over the summer and wish to continue this ritual into the fall. Rather than stocking up on sunflowers and hydrangeas, Beryl recommends picking up some mossy branches or fall flowers such as chrysanthemums, dahlias, and pansies.

"Choosing these flowers in autumnal colors such as oranges, reds, and deep purples bring the fall colors into the home and keep your house feeling fresh," she explains.

Of course, there are also many realistic-looking dried branches on the market these days, too. "Remember to look for branches with colors like plum, gold, and orangey reds," Beryl shares.

Pay Attention to Your Lighting

Lighting is critical in setting the tone within a space, and Watts notes that warm lighting will automatically make a room feel more snug. She suggests making use of lamps and layering your lighting within a given room come fall; be sure to pick up soft warm-white or yellow bulbs.

Then, light those fall-colored candles every evening after the sun goes down—and if you have a fireplace to use, even better.

"Candlelight, and of course firelight, also makes for a warm, cozy atmosphere, plus they put off heat which instantly brings coziness to your space," Watts shares.

Pay careful attention to the type of lamp you pick for your space, too. "Wherever we can, we pepper in a pop of color with a fun lamp or texture with a standing vintage lamp but also create a 'stay in and drink a pumpkin spice latte' vibe," says Taylor Fusco, the founder of Tay Fusco Design.

Focus on Layering

Lighting isn't the only thing you'll want to layer for a cozy feel. Watts suggests layering rugs, textiles, and even window treatments, too. If you're wondering what types of fabrics to add to the mix, she recommends focusing on textiles made from boucle, velvet, mohair, and fur.

Incorporate Personal Touches

You can never go wrong displaying some personal accents.

"I love pieces with history and sentimental value," Watts says. "When you display personal items like photos, books, artwork, and objects collected over time, your space will feel homie and cozy. Surrounding yourself with meaningful and cherished items will create a sense of belonging, comfort, and warmth."

Take time to shop your own home for pieces that you may have tucked away but deserve a little extra love this season.
